Key, Francis Scott
(1 ago. 1779, cond. de Frederick, Md., EE.UU.–11 ene., 1843, Baltimore, Md.).

Abogado estadounidense, autor del himno nacional de EE.UU. "The Star Spangled Banner (La bandera tachonada de estrellas). Después de la quema de Washington, D.C., durante la guerra anglo-estadounidense, fue enviado a conseguir la liberación de un amigo que estaba cautivo en un buque británico en la bahía de Chesapeake. Fue testigo del cañoneo de Fort McHenry por los británicos, la noche del 13–14 sep. 1814. A la mañana siguiente, cuando vio que la bandera estadounidense seguía flameando, escribió el poema Defense of Fort M'Henry [Defensa del fuerte M'Henry], que se publicó en el Baltimore Patriot y al que luego se adaptó la música de una antigua canción inglesa de parranda, "To Anacreon in Heaven (A Anacreón en el cielo). En 1931 se adoptó la canción como himno nacional de EE.UU.
